Outside: Steven Hawking
The environment outside the wall reflects Steven Hawkings quote: “So it might seem possible, that as we advance in science and technology, we might be able to construct a wormhole, or warp space and time in some other way, so as to be able to travel into our past.” The moving textures and simple rectalinear shapes reflect the motions of advances in technology and time and space travel.
Inside: Florence Nightingale. The environment inside the wall reflects Florence Nightingale's quote: “The object and colour in the materials around us actually have a physical effect on us, on the way we feel”. The differing materiality of walls, ceiling, floor, ramp and imposing cube are juxtaposed and proportioned to create the 'effect' that Nightingale suggests.
The minimal lighting creates contrast and heightens the experience to moving along the ramp from Steven Hawkings vibrant environment, through the central area and into the dark, cave-like interior.
The single shaft of light represents the inspiration for Nightingales ideas.
